JW Marriott Cannes *****

Hotel JW Marriott Cannes *****

The hotel itself is in a great location but that is the only good thing about it. When we got to the hotel, we were so tired, because we had been driving for so long, so our plans were to have dinner and then go to sleep. Well, at first when we got to our room, we felt that the room smelled quite weirdly, even stank, OK, we opened the window, changed our clothes quickly and went out for dinner.

After dinner we got back to the hotel, I went to take a shower, when I returned the room, my sister showed that there is a small bug in our bed. Me, who gets really upset about every bug etc., I immediately killed it and quite freaked out. I placed it on a piece of paper and went to show it to my parents to find out what the hell is it and is it really what I think it is??

Let´s just say that my suspicions didn´t fail me, it was a bed bug!!! Now I realised that this is the reason the room stank, they had done some exterminating there. So I went to the reception and asked them to change our room immediately.

You can imagine how upset I was, my hand was shaking and when I was showing the bed bug to the receptionist, it accidentally dropped to his computer and it got lost in it. Now it wasn´t only me who was freaking out. So when he at first was trying to tell me that this is a first time he hears about the bed bug problem in their hotel, I saw that it really wasn´t like that because he believed me immediately and was like, oh no, get it off, get it off.. 🙂

Luckily we got the new room, well, it was 2 am and our parents didn´t want to leave to another hotel, also in their room they didn´t have bed bugs, so we couldn´t leave immediately. I tried to tell the guy in the receptionist to cancel our next nights, but he told that we have to speak with the manager in the morning. Great ha? So I finally talked myself a complimentary WI-FI to the room just so I could search for a new hotel for the next night. He didn´t really want to give this to me, but finally he did. He was polite though!

So when we got to our old room to get our bags, we saw two more bed bugs that were crawling from between the beds. Iuuuu, so disgusting! By the way, the concierge wasn´t surprised about the bed bugs as well, he told that this is really not a problem here that what are we afraid of and laughed at us. So I guess we are too spoiled… 😉

That night was awful, we were up the whole night, because we were watching to see if there were any more bed bugs that crawl in the bed. We were so exhausted in the morning. What a great vacation, ha?

I do have to say that the guest relations lady was nice, she wanted us to stay, even offered a suite (the suite wasn´t really nothing great there, I wouldn´t book it for that amount that it is, the suite they offered us had a view to some buildings and all over it wasn´t nothing special) but the feeling that we have to stay up another night because we feel like there are bed bugs crawling on us, made us decide to leave.

So basically in the most expensive hotel in the entire vacation, all we had was one sleepless night and a feeling of disgust and disappointment. Also the feeling that someone is crawling on us. We didn´t ask for a compensation but they could have offered something, like free parking for the night or I don´t know, oh, silly me, of course they did offer something: for the compensation we got a complimentary WI-FI for one night, so we could look for another hotel for the next night. 🙂 Best hotel night ever! (That was sarcasm.)

General

Reception and welcome  Reception was nice, the welcome was so-so, a bit snobbish. But the guest relations lady was very polite and friendly, as was the receptionist at night.
Welcome drink Nope.
Free upgrade Nope and actually asked this time. 🙂
Valet and parking Yes and yes, but it wasn´t definitely for free. Valet was really professional and friendly.
Concierge Yes, he was friendly.

Breakfast

Sparkling wine No.
Hot meal Yes.
In general  The place for the breakfast is beautiful, the view is amazing, you can see the promenade and the sea. But no fresh grapefruit juice. Also they had a choice of ordering hot meals a la carte, that included Eggs Benedict.

The room

In general  In general the room was a bit claustrophobic, it smelled bad (probably it was because of the termination of the bed bugs), it is not like in the pictures, it is a bit darker and looks tired. Though you could see that they tried to follow some kind of a design, but it just made me dizzy. I wouldn´t spend my week there, even if there hadn´t been bed bugs.
Room type Guest room:http://www.marriott.com/hotels/travel/ncejw-jw-marriott-cannes/
Surprise in the room A small chocolate candy and a few small bed bugs. 🙂
iPhone dock No.
Blanket and the blanket case Yes and yes.
Carped Yes.
Amenities and bathroom Basic and the bathroom was OK, better than the room because it was lighter and wasn´t that claustrophobic.
Shower curtain? No.
Are the TV speakers in the bathroom too? I don´t remember.
Bath salt and bath No and yes.
Slippers and robe I don´t know, was too afraid of looking to the closet.
Free WI-FI No (did get it complimentary at night because of some issues…).
Air conditioning Yes.
Bed bugs Yes.

Hotel area (spa, dinner etc)

The hotel wasn´t that impressive, it was a bit old. I can understand too, because people stay there anyway, because it is in a great location.I didn´t see the pool area though, wish I had looked.

Location                     Great, just in the promenade and with a sea view, also next to the Intercontinental.

I visited                      July 2013.

Would I go again?      Never! Bed bugs are not allowed in a five-star hotel experience!

Value of money          Poor.

Purpose of the trip      Vacation.

Nights                         Planned to stay 2, spent only 1 night.

Rating

Luxury 6 out of 10, even if there weren´t bed bugs. But because of the bed bugs my rating is 1 out of 10.

  1. What a horrible experience. Glad to see that you left the other day. The hotel didn’t act any professional. That’s a good reason to never go there. Thanks for the review 🙂

  3. You guys are brave. I would not have been able to stay in the room with bedbugs. The fundamental aspect of lodgings in general…should be having a bed where you can sleep comfortably. I would have asked for free parking, so I could sleep in my car lol.

    • Not brave, just too shy to make a greater problem of it. 😦 But yes, we should have slept in the car, actually we though of it at some point, but I don’t know why we didn’t… Plus they wouldn’t have compensated for the room, so probably we thought that since our parents didn’t have bed bugs, may-be the next room wouldn’t as well… But still!!! We definitely would have slept in the car so much better. :)))) (And I’m not even starting to talk about the fact that they didn’t compensate the room. They should have done it and I should have demanded it. What a sissy and what a waste for the night… :D)

  4. That is crazy! They so should’ve comped the room. They should’ve never rented the room until they’d made sure there were no more bed bugs and gotten rid of the mattresses etc. I check for bed bugs first thing in every hotel I sleep in. You pull up the sheet by the headboard and look at the mattress, under the seams because they like dark hiding places. If there is dark spots (basically feces) and/or bed bugs remove yourself from the room immediately. Sorry this happened to you. I would freak out too!

  5. If someone laughed at me for stating there were bed begs, I would report his hotel the corporate level immediately and report them to the proper offcials. Bud bugs are taken very, very seriously in the United States. I can’t speak to how Cannes overlook their hotels, but bed begs don’t change behavior in different countries. Chances are, if there were two, there were many more elsewhere. You were way more calm than I would have been; I would have left the hotel that night and demand a refund.

    • You’re right, I should have done it but I just started to think like, oh OK, may-be they really didn’t know etc. Though I know that there had to be this problem before because of the specific smell and the reaction of the reception. I know that in the States the hotel would have acted so much better (I’ve had an incident in a hotel in the States and the staff was so professional, immediately they solved the problem and after I got to the room they called and tried to make us feel better again etc, so eventually we left with a great feeling from the hotel), but in Cannes they are so used to getting clients all the time, so I think at some point they don’t care enough, because they know that there is a next person that will come to their hotel anyway.
